Light, lives and installments of contemporary Mumbai, from the working class, are exploited and celebrated by writer/director Payal Kapadia, who won the first prize in this year’s Cannes, the film festival for its debut in the revealing narrative. Focused on two bedroom colleagues who also work together at a hospital head of Pabha (Kani Kusruti) and the recent Rent of Anu (Divya Pabha) -Tiù his colleague, Cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), Kapadia’s movie unfolds over moments of connection and heart, hope and delicate. Pabha, her husband of an organized marriage that lives in distant Germany, is courted by a doctor in his hospital; Anu brings a love story with a Muslim man who must maintain a secret of his severe Hindu family; Parvaty finds herself managing a sudden dump from her apartment. Kapadia captures the stirring of the metropolis and the outdoor tranquility of a village at sea with equal shine, articulated by its excellent actresses and the camera with lyrical naturalism that occasionally moves to dreams of dream. All we imagine how light is a study full of feelings of the transforming power of friendship and the brotherhood, in all its complexities and riches.
